After a year-long nationwide search, Grand Rapids Chorus of Sweet Adelines (GRSA) is proud and excited to name Lansing resident Holli Houtz as its new director.

“I am just elated and excited to learn this great news,” Houtz enthused.  “It was a long time coming as GRSA’ s search was very thorough and intensive. I didn’t want to get my hopes up.  It is just so amazing to get this position.”
Holli grew up with a passion for barbershop surrounding her as numerous relatives, including her parents and grandparents, have been involved for decades.

“I first went onstage when I was five years old,” she explained.  “For family vacations we went to barbershop events.  My love and passion of barbershop, singing with family members, and community has always been very happy times for me.”

Houtz’s resume lists her mission statement: “I love working with motivated individuals who want to make beautiful and artistic music. There is nothing better than the joy and community created by singing together.  Singing is my passion and supporting and encouraging others on their musical journey is my mission.”

She is a graduate of Western Michigan University majoring in Choral/General Music Education. Holli is proficient as a music educator, director, and gifted performer. She also has her own business producing learning tracks. While at WMU, her membership in the internationally regarded vocal jazz ensemble, The Gold Company, came with winning the Monterey Jazz Festival Next Generation competition.

But that’s not all. She is a champion with Cosmic quartet in the Rising Star Division (under age 26) of Sweet Adelines International (SAI). She is a SAI regional Champion with Girl Talk quartet, which includes her mother. Girl Talk is also the reigning district quartet champion in the Pioneer District of the Barbershop Harmony Society. She co-directs a gender inclusive chorus named MI-X based in southeast Michigan. Holli also enjoys spending quality time with her husband Jonah Houtz, (who is of course) a barbershop singer, and they are the happy owners of three cats and a dog.

Holli Houtz hopes to take the Grand Rapids Chorus of Sweet Adelines to new levels. “At upcoming contests, I want to knock some socks off,” she said gleefully. “I can’t wait to form connections and trust with the group and find out where they want to go.”

Team Leader Sue Kuzee agrees: “Holli’s election as our chorus director marks a significant moment for us.  She embodies the passion, talents and vision necessary for our growth. Her leadership is sure to elevate our musical abilities and inspire each of us to reach our full potential.  As we look forward to a bright and harmonious future, we’re excited to embark on this new journey together under her guidance.”
